HHA is a Valued Occupation
For the thousands of Americans living with conditions that require daily care and supervision, the assistance of home health aides (or HHAs) is invaluable. When a patient is elderly, physically disabled, terminally ill, or otherwise unable to care for themselves, being able to live at home rather than in long-term facility or hospital care allows him or her to retain an important measure of personal freedom. With the help of a home health aide (reporting to other medical professionals), a patient can maintain some level of independence and comfort.

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
Home Health Aides assist elderly people with cognitive and physical disabilities or illnesses from the comfort of their own home. Home Health Aides are allowed to be involved in many intimate aspects of patient care, under the supervision of a nurse, such as administering medication and checking vital signs.
They may also educate families on how to best take care of certain aspects of the patient’s wellness. With the job outlook expected to jump in the next decade as people continue to age, demand for attentive and caring HHAs increases constantly.
Check out the below FAQs to determine if being a Home Health Aide is a good option for entering the medical field.
What’s the difference between a Home Health Aide and a Nursing Assistant (NA)?
While there are similarities between the positions, NAs typically work in a hospital or other medical facility setting. Home Health Aides provide service within the patient’s home.
What’s the difference between a Home Health Aide and Personal Care Assistant (PCA)?
Personal Care Assistants typically provide less intensive, hands-on medical care for their in-home patients. Both positions assist with everyday tasks.
How long does it take to become a Home Health Aide?
The HHA program at ABC takes only 3 weeks!
How do I become a Home Health Aide?
To become certified, a Home Health Aide will need to complete a 76-hour classroom training program, plus one day of clinical training. An up-to-date physical exam is also necessary.
What traits should a Home Health Aide have?
HHA’s will need excellent communication and overall people skills, demonstrate compassion, adaptability, reliability, attentiveness, and being physically and mentally fit.
For anyone looking to get a foot into the growing and stable healthcare industry, enjoys working with and helping people, and demonstrates attention to detail, becoming a Home Health Aide may be the right first step for you.
What a Home Health Aide Does
The daily duties of a Home Health Aide are many, and they generally include tasks like monitoring vitals, administering prescribed medications, assisting with personal hygiene, helping patients dress and groom, replacing sterile dressings, and even preparing meals. Advanced HHAs may even be tasked with helping the patient use specialized medical equipment (e.g., ventilators).
Because the family and friends of elderly or ill persons cannot always take on the responsibilities of caring for their loved one, Home Health Aides very commonly work with homebound seniors or recently discharged hospital patients.
A Home Health Aide in NYC is not always in charge of caring for an older adult. One can provide assistance to anyone who needs it, from a person with a chronic illness to someone with a permanent disability or cognitive impairment. With preparation at Home Health Aide schools, these professionals emerge from a program equipped to:
- Help clients with daily personal tasks at home.
- Follow the client’s care plan and report on progress.
- Tend to laundry, vacuuming, and other housekeeping activities.
- Manage the client’s schedule and doctors’ appointments.
- Arrange transportation to medical offices and other locations.
- Handle grocery shopping and meal preparation.
- Help clients maintain their social connections.
Home Health Aide schools also prepare students to provide basic health-related services. The medical capacity of the Home Health Aide is established by state law, so their responsibilities in this area can vary from one state to another. Home Health Aide training in NYC covers the assistance an aide can provide in New York, including checking a client’s temperature, pulse, and respiration rate and providing medications and assisting with prescribed exercises.
The duties of a Home Health Aide aren’t limited to providing medical assistance. However, these services are vital for an individual who requires comprehensive care at home and may work under the supervision of a nurse or other medical professional. However, a caregiver can be an important companion as well, cooking, cleaning, and even accompanying the client for walks and trips to social outings. A caregiver may also drive them to and from a variety of destinations whenever necessary.

Testimonials
I loved my time in ABC, loved the teacher, location, practice, classmates, everything. Small school but great classes. Thank you Dahiana Pena for being an awesome teacher. I learned everything needed to become a HHA. I strongly recommend this school.
Employment of Home Health Aides is projected to grow 48 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations.
What a wonderful school. We have sent many individuals to get their Home Health Aide training at ABC and we couldn’t be happier with the incredible results that we have received. All the Home Health Aides that we have received from this school have been professional, competent, and dedicated employees. Our interactions with the staff at ABC has always been warm and friendly. I highly recommend ABC Training Center for anybody who is looking to become a home health aide.
They have wonderful instructors. I took a HHA course and my instructor was Ms. Bibi. This class was worth every penny. You learn everything you need to know and then some. The entire experience was thorough and made me well prepared for the job. Most places teach you the basics and boot you out of the door and make you figure out everything yourself. This school tells you what to prepare for in the real world as a HHA. They throw you every scenario you could possibly think of and how to handle it from client to agency. Like you, I was wandering around the internet looking for a decent place to get my certificate. I was contemplating on whether or not I should go to a free program or spend $100s on a certificate and which program was right. Believe me when I say that this school is the right place. Also, the agencies come looking for you for work. Great school. Underrated. 5 stars.
Classes can be booked for large groups or companies with your own separate classroom. Contact us for more information.
